Stories of Impact

Not every story is told — but every life matters.

Privacy First

Our First Award

Protecting the privacy of the young people connected to the Wright family — and to this scholarship — is one of our highest priorities. For that reason, we rarely share personal stories, details, or identifying information. Their journeys belong to them.

But there is one story we do tell:
the first one.

In September 2018, we were honored to award the very first John and Judy Wright Scholarship to a bright young woman who had already overcome more obstacles than most adults face in a lifetime. Her application stood out not simply because of her achievements, but because she embodied the strength, determination, and resilience this scholarship exists to support.

Separated from her parents at age five due to substance abuse, she spent her childhood moving through multiple foster homes and schools—often separated from her siblings, often forced to start over. Yet through every transition, she carried one constant:

"One thing that remained constant was my desire to excel in school… The odds were stacked against me, but my determination to be successful was greater."

At 15, she was adopted and began to experience stability for the first time.
"My opportunities were endless now," she wrote.

And she proved it:

The scholarship helped relieve financial pressure by covering tuition, books, and supplies — allowing her to focus on learning rather than survival. With this support, she took her next steps toward joining the 3% of foster youth nationwide who go on to earn a four-year degree.

In her thank-you letter, she shared the impact your generosity had on her future:

"My ultimate goal in life is to become a psychologist and open my own practice. I want to inspire children who grew up in foster care to triumph over all obstacles and defy all odds. First, I will be the example.

I hope that one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me."

We think she is the inspiring one.

We are humbled to be a small part of her journey and proud that she was the first recipient of the John and Judy Wright Scholarship. Through her example — and through the students who have followed — John and Judy's legacy continues to expand, shaping brighter futures and stronger communities for years to come.
